‘Moana 2’ Releases 1st Full Length Song: Listen to ‘Beyond’

Disney is ready to share the first sounds of their highly anticipated film, Moana 2.

“Do you hear the call of the ocean? ,” Disney Music asked via Instagram on Friday, November 8. “‘Beyond,’ performed by Auli’i Cravalho featuring Te Vaka and written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, from @disneyanimation’s Moana 2 is out now. Listen wherever you stream music.”

The track marks the first full-length song from the upcoming movie slated for release on November 27. It’s also the first song from new composers Barlow, 25, and Bear, 23, who took over for Lin-Manuel Miranda after he composed the soundtrack for the first Moana.

“Beyond” hopes to emphasize Moana’s (played by Cravalho, 23) expanded worldview and the added pressure she feels as a community leader.

“What lies beyond under skies I’ve never seen? / Will I losе myself between my home and what’s unknown?” Cravalho sings in the inspiring ballad. “If I go bеyond leaving all I love behind / With the future of our people still to find / Can I go beyond?”

Two months before the song’s release, Bear delivered a preview into what fans can expect to hear in the soundtrack when the film is released just in time for Thanksgiving.

“Moana’s personal journey is huge in this one,” Bear previously told Entertainment Weekly in September. “The last movie was more about finding her own self-identity within herself, and now it’s much bigger because it’s about community and how you connect with others and what it means to be a leader and how she feels being responsible for everyone.

“’Beyond’ lives in a similar place to ‘How Far I’ll Go,’” Bear added when referencing the 2016 hit from the first film, “yet the context is entirely different.”

“How Far I’ll Go” was nominated for Best Original Song at the 89th Academy Awards and won the 2017 Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Back in February, Walt Disney Company Chief executive Bob Iger confirmed that Moana 2 is coming to screens in November. While many of the plot details remain private for now, Disney promised that the sequel would reunite Moana and Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers.

After receiving an unexpected call from her ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

Moana 2, which also stars Nicole Scherzinger and Temuera Morrison, hits theaters on Wednesday, November 27.
